Ice Barrel 300 Review: What $1,449 Delivered Gets You

Checked against the manufacturer's page on 11 October 2026 · Research-based review by PlungeWise · 5 min read

The Ice Barrel 300 is an insulated, upright barrel that holds 77 gallons. You sit in it rather than lie down, and you cool it with ice unless you add a chiller later. This review uses Ice Barrel's own published specifications plus our ice calculator. We have not tested the barrel ourselves, so nothing below is a measured result.

Short version: a well-insulated, compact tub with a limited lifetime warranty and ports for a chiller. Budget for $1,149.99 plus $300 shipping, and expect a fresh fill to need about 8–10 bags of ice. Users over 6 ft may not get their shoulders under, per Ice Barrel's own FAQ.

How much ice does an Ice Barrel 300 need?

Ice Barrel does not publish this, so we ran its volume through our ice bath calculator. These are ideal heat-balance estimates for a fresh fill, with ice from a typical freezer (0°F) and 10 lb bags:

Estimated loose ice for a fresh fill. Calculated by PlungeWise, not measured in a real barrel.
Water in the barrelTap → targetIce needed10 lb bags
77 gal (full)77°F → 50°Fabout 98 lb10
77 gal (full)70°F → 50°Fabout 72 lb8
77 gal (full)77°F → 45°Fabout 119 lb12

Two practical notes. First, you will not fill to the brim: your body and about 12 gallons of meltwater need room, so a real fill is usually lower and needs proportionally less ice. Second, these numbers are for starting from tap water. Between sessions the insulated lid keeps the water cold for a while, so later sessions need top-up ice rather than a full load. Ice Barrel does not publish how fast the water warms, and we have not measured it.

Ice or chiller with this barrel?

The ports let you add a chiller later, which is the main reason to choose this barrel over a cheaper ice-only tub. Ice Barrel lists its own chiller and barrel-plus-chiller bundles but does not publish the chiller's specifications on the pages we checked. If you plunge most days, compare your ice spend with a chiller in the ice vs. chiller calculator, and use the chiller electricity calculator once you know a chiller's wattage.

Strengths (from published specs)

  • Foam-insulated barrel and lid
  • Small footprint for 77 gallons
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Chiller ports for a later upgrade
  • Upright seat: easy to get in and out

Check before buying

  • $300 shipping takes the total to $1,449.99
  • Over 6 ft: shoulders may stay above water
  • About 700 lb when full: check your floor or deck
  • Ice cost adds up if you plunge often
  • No published chiller specs on the pages we checked

Who it suits

A good fit if you are under about 6 ft, want an insulated tub that looks at home on a patio or in a gym, and like the option of adding a chiller later.

Look elsewhere if you are tall, want to lie down, or want the cheapest way to try cold plunging. Our under-$1,000 guide covers cheaper ice tubs and a budget chiller bundle, and Plunge All-In vs Ice Barrel 300 compares it with a premium chiller tub.
