9 DIY & Budget Ice Bath Ideas for Cold Plunging at Home

You don't need a top-tier chiller tub to start cold plunging. The difference between a premium tub and a livestock trough full of ice is not the water — it is convenience, temperature control, filtration, insulation and maintenance. A budget setup means setting the temperature by hand with ice instead of dialling it in and holding it, no filtration loop, whatever insulation the container came with, and a maintenance routine built around hauling ice and changing water rather than servicing a filter. Below are nine setups people commonly use — eight of them budget builds, plus one we recommend against — with honest pros, cons and estimated cost ranges so you can pick the one that fits your space and budget.

1. Galvanized stock tank — the classic

A livestock watering trough is the most common DIY plunge: it is cheap, it holds a lot of water, and it is built to sit outdoors year-round in a field. A 100–150 gallon tank is the usual size people pick. The construction is single-wall galvanized steel with no insulation layer, so ice will melt faster than in an insulated tub — we have not measured by how much. A foam or pool-noodle lid is the standard fix. The other trade-off is the look: it looks like a farm trough, because it is one.

2. Inflatable barrel tub

Purpose-made inflatable tubs pack away when not in use and need no tools to set up, which makes them the easiest way to test whether cold plunging is for you before spending more. Manufacturers describe the walls as insulated, and a lid is usually included; we have not measured how that compares with a bare trough in practice.

3. Large plastic tote or storage bin

A 50–100 gallon heavy-duty storage tote is the cheapest "tub-shaped" option. Water is heavy — roughly 8.3 lbs per gallon — so a thin-walled bin can bow or split under the pressure of a full fill. Choose a rugged one, don't overfill, and treat this as a short-term way to try the habit rather than a permanent setup. Totes are also shorter and narrower than a purpose-built tub, so check the internal dimensions against your own height before buying.

4. Repurposed bathtub (indoor or outdoor)

If you already have a bathtub — or can find a used freestanding one — it's a ready-made plunge. Indoors you just fill and ice it; outdoors, a salvaged clawfoot tub makes a surprisingly nice garden plunge. Drainage and moving the tub are the main hassles.

5. IBC tote, cut down

A common DIY route: buy a food-grade IBC tote (the ~275-gallon cube in a metal cage), cut the top down to seat height, and you have a rigid, deep plunge with a built-in frame. Use a genuinely food-grade tote and clean it thoroughly first — you don't know what a used one previously held.

6. Chest-freezer conversion — not recommended

PlungeWise does not recommend chest-freezer conversions. This is the most-shared DIY cooling build on the internet, and it is the one entry on this page we advise against rather than present as an option.

A chest freezer is an appliance that was never designed to be filled with water, sealed by hand, left outdoors, and climbed into. The conversion places standing water and mains electricity in direct proximity, which is a genuine electric-shock hazard. It typically voids the appliance warranty, and hand-applied seals are a common failure point — including mould in seams that cannot be reached for cleaning.

We have not built, measured or inspected one, and we do not publish a component list, a cost estimate, a build sequence or safety instructions for it. If cooling without ice is what you want, a purpose-built tub or a standalone chiller added to a stock tank is what we would point you to instead.

7. Stock tank + add a chiller later

A sensible middle path: start with a cheap stock tank and ice, prove you'll stick with the habit, then add a standalone chiller and a simple pump loop to reach a no-ice setup. 8. Insulated trough wrap

Not a tub itself, but the cheapest upgrade to any of the above: wrap the outside with foam board, a camping mat, or a pool cover, and add a floating lid. Adding insulation slows heat transfer into the water, so the ice should last longer and your ongoing ice spend should fall. We have not run a controlled ice-melt test, so we won't put a number on it — measuring exactly this is on our list for a future update.

9. Kiddie pool — ultra-budget, short-term

The cheapest entry point there is. A rigid-sided kiddie pool holds enough water to submerge to the waist, or in a bigger one most of the body. It has no insulation layer and thin walls, so treat it as a way to find out whether you like cold water at all — not as a setup you keep. It also looks like exactly what it is.

Which DIY option should you pick?

If you just want to try cold plunging this week, start with a kiddie pool, a tote, or an inflatable tub — all three are cheap enough that abandoning the habit costs you little. If you already know you'll keep going, a stock tank is the option we'd pick: it's built for permanent outdoor use and it leaves the door open to add a chiller later. That's an editorial judgement about the trade-offs, not the result of a test we ran. We do not recommend the chest-freezer conversion at all — see section 6 for why.
