Important: Chest freezers are not designed as plunge tubs. Water and mains power are a serious hazard. A panel RCD helps reduce electric-shock risk but doesn't make immersion in an appliance safe. Disconnect all power before entry and have a qualified electrician assess your installation. This isn't a wiring or conversion tutorial.
Parts: My $300 was a past build cost, not a shopping quote. The Amazon Inkbird listing is a US 110V model; verify the electrical ratings for your country. The linked net is a similar product, not the verified exact model I own.
Curious how it actually runs?
The second-hand Fujicom is somewhere around 300–400 litres (I never checked the label). I keep the Inkbird ITC-308 set to 3°C with the probe in the water. In the photo it reads 6.1°C after someone got out, then cools back down. I rinse first, skim the surface with an aquarium net and replace the water about every two weeks. No filter, no added sealing, and no visible rust or faults after six months. The original drain plug held without leaks on mine. Electricity use has not been measured yet. Photos: 23 October 2026.
Questions from the Reddit thread
These are the things people asked about my actual setup.
Does it run 24/7?
Yes. It's connected through the Inkbird around the clock. The compressor switches on only when the water warms past the setting. I unplug it whenever someone is in the water.
Did you seal the freezer?
No extra sealing. Its original drain plug held, and I've had no leaks in six months. That's specific to my freezer; inspect yours and check for leaks before use.
What about GFCI protection?
My home has an RCD at the electrical panel. RCDs and GFCIs both detect certain current leakage faults, but protection and installation requirements differ by location. It is not a substitute for disconnecting power.
Isn't the lock dangerous?
Mine locks with a key. It's locked when nobody is around so my small kids can't get in. The lid stays fully open while someone is inside.
How do you clean the water?
No filtration. I rinse before getting in, skim debris using an aquarium net and change the water every two weeks.
How much electricity does it use?
Not measured yet. My rough calculation is around $5–8 per month, but that is an estimate, not a real usage reading. Actual costs depend on weather, insulation and electricity rates.
Can this go in a basement?
General planning advice, not something I've tested myself: think about splashing, drainage and water damage. A cooler room may reduce compressor runtime. Check ventilation, floor drainage and the electrical setup with a qualified professional.
Buying a used freezer?
Five things I'd inspect before paying for one.
- Drain plug and any signs of previous leaks
- Rust or corrosion on the inside
- Condition of the lid gasket
- Whether the lid has a working lock
- Whether the freezer actually cools
